    Closing the Loop: Development of a Dashboard for Quality Improvement of Business Education Programs

    Business schools continuously improve their processes and program assessment activities, but fall short in achieving faculty\u27s awareness of process steps and disseminating results to inform and trigger continuous improvement actions. The assessment process of the Craig School of Business at California State University, Fresno had worked well. It evaluated student learning of core competencies of its Business Administration degree programs. The assessment process had a sound set of program goals and student learning outcomes and metrics. Learning outcomes were measured semiannually, and reports were written annually. Assessment results consistently surpassed benchmarks. Still, the assessment process did not effectively disseminate results and findings, which often led to a lack of process awareness and the inability to motivate and engage faculty in the overall assessment and improvement process. The Assessment Team launched an initiative to design and implement a dashboard that would track assessment scores as a means to address these shortcomings and ensure closing the loop with actual improvement results. This article presents the development process of the Assurance of Learning Dashboard and the effects of using the dashboard to facilitate the analysis and dissemination of assessment results. Findings suggest that the dashboard was successful. However, documentation for closing the loop activities continue to be a challenge. Implications for academic institutions and future research opportunities are presented

    Modeling two-language competition dynamics

    During the last decade, much attention has been paid to language competition in the complex systems community, that is, how the fractions of speakers of several competing languages evolve in time. In this paper we review recent advances in this direction and focus on three aspects. First we consider the shift from two-state models to three state models that include the possibility of bilingual individuals. The understanding of the role played by bilingualism is essential in sociolinguistics. In particular, the question addressed is whether bilingualism facilitates the coexistence of languages. Second, we will analyze the effect of social interaction networks and physical barriers.     The impact of relative position and returns on sacrifice and reciprocity: an experimental study using individual decisions

    We present a comprehensive experimental design that makes it possible to characterize other-regarding preferences and their relationship to the decision maker’s relative position. Participants are faced with a large number of decisions involving variations in the trade-offs between own and other’s payoffs, as well as in other potentially important factors like the decision maker’s relative position. We find that: (1) choices are responsive to the cost of helping and hurting others; (2) The weight a decision maker places on others’ monetary payoffs depends on whether the decision maker is in an advantageous or disadvantageous relative position; and (3) We find no evidence of reciprocity of the type linked to menu-dependence. The results of a mixture-model estimation show considerable heterogeneity in subjects’ motivations and confirm the absence of reciprocal motives. Pure selfish behavior is the most frequently observed behavior. Among the subjects exhibiting social preferences, social-welfare maximization is the most frequent, followed by inequality-aversion and by competitiveness

    Stated and revealed inequality aversion in three subject pools

    This paper reports data from three subject pools (n=717 subjects) using techniques based on those of Loewenstein, et al. (1989) and Blanco, et al. (2011) to obtain parameters, respectively, of stated and revealed inequality aversion. We provide a replication opportunity for those papers, with two innovations: (i) a design which allows stated and revealed preferences to be compared at the individual level; (ii) assessment of robustness of findings across subjects from a UK university, a Turkish university and Amazon Mechanical Turk. Our findings on stated aversion to inequality are qualitatively similar to those of Loewenstein, et al. in each of our subject pools, whereas there are notable differences between some of our findings on revealed preference and those of Blanco, et al. We find that revealed advantageous inequality aversion is often stronger than revealed dis-advantageous inequality aversion. In most subject pools, we find some (weak) correlation between corresponding parameters of stated and revealed inequality aversion

    The emergence of altruism as a social norm

    Expectations, exerting influence through social norms, are a very strong candidate to explain how complex societies function. In the Dictator game (DG), people expect generous behavior from others even when they cannot enforce any sharing of the pie. Here we assume that people donate following their expectations, and that they update their expectation after playing a DG by reinforcement learning to construct a model that explains the main experimental results in the DG. Full agreement with the experimental results is reached when some degree of mismatch between expectations and donations is added into the model. These results are robust against the presence of envious agents, but affected if we introduce selfish agents that do not update their expectations. Our results point to social norms being on the basis of the generous behavior observed in the DG and also to the wide applicability of reinforcement learning to explain many strategic interactions

    An NMR-based model to investigate the metabolic phenoreversion of COVID-19 patients throughout a longitudinal study.

    After SARS-CoV-2 infection, the molecular phenoreversion of the immunological response and its associated metabolic dysregulation are required for a full recovery of the patient. This process is patient-dependent due to the manifold possibilities induced by virus severity, its phylogenic evolution and the vaccination status of the population. We have here investigated the natural history of COVID-19 disease at the molecular level, characterizing the metabolic and immunological phenoreversion over time in large cohorts of hospitalized severe patients (n = 886) and non-hospitalized recovered patients that self-reported having passed the disease (n = 513). Non-hospitalized recovered patients do not show any metabolic fingerprint associated with the disease or immune alterations. Acute patients are characterized by the metabolic and lipidomic dysregulation that accompanies the exacerbated immunological response, resulting in a slow recovery time with a maximum probability of around 62 days. As a manifestation of the heterogeneity in the metabolic phenoreversion, age and severity become factors that modulate their normalization time which, in turn, correlates with changes in the atherogenesis-associated chemokine MCP-1. Our results are consistent with a model where the slow metabolic normalization in acute patients results in enhanced atherosclerotic risk, in line with the recent observation of an elevated number of cardiovascular episodes found in post-COVID-19 cohorts

    Impairment of the mitochondrial one-carbon metabolism enzyme SHMT2 causes a novel brain and heart developmental syndrome

    Inborn errors of metabolism cause a wide spectrum of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions [15]. A pivotal enzyme located at the intersection of the amino acid and folic acid metabolic pathways is SHMT2, the mitochondrial form of serine hydroxymethyltransferase. SHMT2 performs the first step in a series of reactions that provide one-carbon units covalently bound to folate species in mitochondria: it transfers one-carbon units from serine to tetrahydrofolate (THF), generating glycine and 5,10-methylene-THF. Using whole exome sequencing (WES), we identified biallelic SHMT2 variants in five individuals from four different families. All identified variants were located in conserved residues, either absent or extremely rare in control databases (gnomAD, ExAC), and cosegregated based on a recessive mode of inheritance (pRec = 0.9918 for this gene). In family F1, a homozygous missense variant present in two affected siblings was located in a region without heterozygosity (~ 10 Mb, the only region > 1 Mb shared by both siblings) in which no other candidate variants were found, providing a strong genetic evidence of causality for these variants. The missense/in-frame deletion nature of these variants, and the absence of loss-of-function homozygous individuals in control databases, combined with the fact that complete loss of SHMT2 is embryonic lethal in the mouse, suggested that these variants may cause hypomorphic effects. Using 3D molecular dynamics models of the SHMT2 protein, we concluded that these candidate variants probably alter the SHMT2 oligomerization process, and/or disrupt the conformation of the active site, thus inducing deleterious effects on SHMT2 enzymatic function

    The ocean sampling day consortium

    Ocean Sampling Day was initiated by the EU-funded Micro B3 (Marine Microbial Biodiversity, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology) project to obtain a snapshot of the marine microbial biodiversity and function of the world’s oceans. It is a simultaneous global mega-sequencing campaign aiming to generate the largest standardized microbial data set in a single day. This will be achievable only through the coordinated efforts of an Ocean Sampling Day Consortium, supportive partnerships and networks between sites. This commentary outlines the establishment, function and aims of the Consortium and describes our vision for a sustainable study of marine microbial communities and their embedded functional traits

    Keep them alive! Design and Evaluation of the “Community Fostering Reference Model”

    Firms host online communities for commercial purposes, for example in order to integrate customers into ideation for new product development. The success of these firm-hosted online communities depends entirely on the cooperation of a high number of customers that constantly produce valuable knowledge for firms. However, in practice, the majority of successfully implemented communities suffers from stagnation and even a decrease of member activities over time. Literature provides numerous guidelines on how to build and launch these online communities. While these models describe the initial steps of acquiring and activating a community base from scratch very well and explicitly, they neglect continuous member activation and acquistion after a successful launch. Against this background, the authors propose the Community Fostering Reference Model (CoFoRM), which represents a set of general procedures and instruments to continuously foster member activity. In this paper, the authors present the theory-driven design as well as the evaluation of the CoFoRM in a practical use setting. The evaluation results reveal that the CoFoRM represents a valuable instrument in the daily working routine of community managers, since it efficiently helps activating community members especially in the late phases of a community’s LifeCycle
